Intellectual Property in Synthetic Biology - Enacted Issues of Sharing and Owning
2.4 Findings We began this study by asking to what extent the Synthetic biology-IP-issue space is infiltrated by different normative articulations, and we found that the synbio-ip-issue space primarily is infiltrated by innovation, control, and public concerns, which makes the synbio-ip-issue space more of a synbio innovation-control-public issue space that foregrounds concerns about innovation, control, and public factors in synthetic biology. The normative issue space concerned about the public, control and innovation, thus seems to be worried about the key questionposed in the introduction, pertaining to minimization of risks and maximization of benefits. Furthermore, we have revealed that innovation is being enacted as a key element at stake in the synbio-ip-issue space, and within this enactment we see a controversy of whether intellectual property rights stifles or promotes innovation. Future synbio-IP social studies could maybe attend to the stipulation process of judgements made within the contested territory of IP and innovation, making available a reflexive second order perspective on things (decisions) that matter to society, and hopefully some clues as to how these things matter.
