Intellectual Property in Synthetic Biology - Enacted Issues of Sharing and Owning |
2.3 Differences between Ownership and Sharing Regime
The linking culture with high internal and external linking is seen in both co-link networks but from different kinds of actors. In the sharing regime it is the ".orgs" that have the most dense webwork of interlinks. In the ownership regime the same linking culture is seen between the blogs. Another difference is that in the ownership regime there is a clear divide between corporations and bloggers (bloggers which in this co-link network mainly are patent attorneys). In the middle of this divide we find BIO (the Biotechnology Industry Organisation) which is the connecting link between these two "spheres". The sharing regime issue space does not contain an equivalent to the BIO which is the central connecting link to the corporations and the bloggers. In the sharing regime it is the big open source organisations (Biobricks and Igem), Registry of Standard Biological Parts and Creative Commons who are forming the core of the co-link network. Also, the sharing regime does consist of far more organisations with dense webwork of interlinkings and they are closely connected to universities in the US and Europe. Hence on key take-away from this brief analysis is that the sharing regime is much more active in using and disseminating information via the Internet.
